I vomit<br \/>\non the Universal Charter of Human Rights,<br \/>\non all the UN statements,<br \/>\non feminist movements,<br \/>\non the defenders of freedom and equality,<br \/>\non research done by the happiest city in the world,<br \/>\non all the holy books, and on the saddest<br \/>\ncity in the world: myself!<\/p>\n<p>Nothing shelters me,<br \/>\nnothing sheltered you.<br \/>\nEach morning, the sea regurgitates my corpse<br \/>\nand the wind diffuses my unalive breaths.<br \/>\nEach day, I die and my body greets people,<br \/>\ndeath and exile, then spreads itself far.<\/p>\n<p>We are the corpses of the stateless<br \/>\nwithout shelter and God, traveling<br \/>\ncity to city, reading<br \/>\nthe Holy Book while our pores<br \/>\nwiden and swell with fury.<\/p>\n<p>I vomit.<\/p>\n<p>The lost ring from the Titanic<br \/>\nsurvives and finds its way into a museum<br \/>\nbut your name, bright and shining<br \/>\nas a bird on the sea, your five years of innocence<br \/>\nperishehs in this world of borders and codes.<\/p>\n<p>On which side of the sea,<br \/>\nwhich direction of the sky,<br \/>\nwhich side of the border,<br \/>\nwas God busy with a new mischief<br \/>\nwhen the sea opened its mouth<br \/>\nand swallowed your small body?<\/p>\n<p>2)<\/p>\n<p>The postman does not come on Mondays.<br \/>\nNo letters in the post office Thursdays and Fridays.<br \/>\nFor me, the world is always on a break.<br \/>\nMy lamp does not burn late into night.<br \/>\nNo one asks for me.<br \/>\nNo one walks past my window.<\/p>\n<p>I leave a caf\u00e9 on Fifth street<br \/>\nand look for home.<br \/>\nLook for myself.<br \/>\nI don\u2019t remember my address.<br \/>\nThe more I search the more lost I become.<br \/>\nNo one is familiar.<br \/>\nI try to speak in another tongue<br \/>\nin my Herat accent, but my voice breaks<br \/>\nlike the last glass of wine, I drank.<br \/>\nThe last sip is always bitter<br \/>\nlike a letter that never arrives,<br \/>\nlike exile,<br \/>\nin Berlin, Moscow, and Rotterdam,<br \/>\nin Tehran, and Washington DC.<\/p>\n<p>Pieces of me do not return to me.<br \/>\nI do not return to a home no longer there.<\/p>\n<p>3)<br \/>\nListen,<br \/>\nthis wound is like cancer.<br \/>\nIt sinks its claws into every cell<br \/>\nand spreads into streets<br \/>\nbeyond our invaded veins.<br \/>\nThese days<br \/>\nthe war begins in one spot<br \/>\nrecruits\u2019 soldiers in another<br \/>\nand ruptures in yet another place.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Somaia Ramish is a poet, writer, and human rights activist whose influential voice resonates in the world of literature and human rights advocacy.
